Samuel Kurtz MS has welcomed news that the National Farmers’ Union (NFU) Cymru has received notification that its application for permission to judicially review Welsh Government’s decision to introduce water quality regulations has been granted by the High Court.
NFU Cymru argue that the Welsh Government acted unlawfully by not considering all relevant information when undertaking its Regulatory Impact Assessment prior to the introduction of the regulations.
The regulations, which create Nitrate Vulnerable Zones (NVZs), have long been criticised by the agricultural sector.
The Welsh Conservatives held a debate in the Senedd called on a Senedd committee to urgently review The Water Resources (Control of Agricultural Pollution) (Wales) Regulations 2021. It was supported by opposition parties but blocked by Labour.
Commenting, Welsh Conservative Shadow Rural Affairs Minister Samuel Kurtz MS, said:
“This news is really encouraging for Wales’ farmers and I’m pleased the Senedd’s Economy & Rural Affairs committee will be taking further evidence on NVZs in the autumn.
“As they’ve been told by several sources, the Welsh Labour Government have simply got this wrong: the regulations are too far-reaching, creating a national so-called solution to a localised problem.
“I hope the NFU are successful in overturning the regulations.”
