Following a recent report by a team of researchers from Spain, the UK and the Netherlands, which found that the Oxford AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine has a similar low blood clot risk to the Pfizer vaccine, Samuel Kurtz MS has called on the Welsh Government to review its use of the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine for those under the age of forty.
Speaking on the matter, Samuel said: “It’s promising to see that researchers from across Europe are continuing to explore the potential side-effects of the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine, in particular, the rate of post-exposure thrombosis.”
“This latest report makes for a really encouraging read. Indeed, it provides further evidence to the claim that the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine is safe for consumption for those of all ages. Given the findings of the report, it’s important that the Joint Committee on Vaccines and Immunisation (JCVI) alongside the Welsh Government, review its use for those under the age of forty.”
Samuel finished: “As we continue to move towards a state of unlocking, vaccinating the nation must remain our top priority – this is the only clear path out of the pandemic. With just over 80% of all adults in Wales fully vaccinated against COVID-19, we need to ensure that the momentum remains in place. With 17 year olds now being offered the vaccine here in Wales, we need to use every vaccine: Pfizer, Moderna and Oxford AstraZeneca, to help further protect our population before schools and universities restart in September.”
