Today it was announced in a written statement that a total direct payment ceiling of £238 million had been made available to Welsh farmers, to provide the same level of financial support in 2022, as provided in 2020 and 2021.
The cash injection is set to provide the same level of total payment through the Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) and associated schemes.
It will also continue to take into account the new simplified BPS calculation without the separate Greening payment.
Speaking following the announcement, Samuel Kurtz MS – Welsh Conservative Shadow Rural Affairs Minister—said:
“This is an incredibly welcomed step forward from the Welsh Government which will give farmers the certainty and confidence they need, going into the next financial year.
“The Welsh Government has received record levels of financial commitment from the UK Government in recent months. On top of the annual financial baseline funding of £15.9 billion, the Chancellor has committed an extra £2.5 billion per year – on average – to Wales.
“This, paired with more than £350 million in remaining EU funding for 2022/23, has ensured that there has been ample money for Welsh Government to properly support our farming industry, who are working around the clock to feed the nation.
“As the EU funds continue to taper off, it’s important that the Welsh Government steps up and delivers continued funding to our farmers, rather than divert money intended for our agricultural industry away and towards pet projects which do not benefit our rural economy.”
